2009 UFC Injuries by the numbers

It seems that recently every fighter in the UFC has something wrong with them. Brock is sick, Antonio has staph, Machida has a wrist injury, etc… The only thing I know is all the matches that I was looking forward to for the rest of the year are pretty much shot to hell thanks to the rain of problems that has hit UFC fighters. Beyond all the bad luck thought I decided to take a look back over the entire 2009 year and find out just how many times an injury has forced a fighter out of a scheduled match. The total number of events consist of all UFC PPV events as well as all fight nights and TUF finales. In order to qualify the incident must either be an injury or a disease and it needs to show that it directly caused a scheduled match to be moved or changed. I call these “effective injuries”. That being said let’s take a look at the numbers:
Total number of UFC events for 2009: 19
Total number of effective injuries: 48
Average effective injuries per event: 2.5
Event with least amount of effective injuries: UFC 94 St.Pierre v.s Penn (0)
Event with most amount of effective injuries: UFC 98 Evans v.s Machida (6)
In fact UFC 94 was the only event all year where all scheduled matches appeared to have gone off without a hitch. Bear in mind these numbers may be off by a couple as there may have been undocumented injuries. What I do find interesting is the average effective injuries is 2.5 which means that on any given event announcement, you would have to assume that between 2 and 3 of the scheduled matches will be changed somehow. The funny thing is we aren’t even done with the year yet. There are still two events left, UFC 106 and 107, there already have been some effective injuries but in the time that is left who knows there could be more.
